CNN must like the taste of their shoes. In an embarrassing example of placing one’s foot in their mouth, the news agency recently published a highly explosive and incredibly fake news story regarding a member of the Trump administration, Anthony Scaramucci, and a Russian firm. The story, which has since been retracted, alleges that Scaramucci — a member of President Trump’s transition team– met with a representative of a Russian firm to investigate a Russian investment fund.
According to an article on Breitbart.com, CNN used a single anonymous source to write this: “The source said the Senate intelligence committee is investigating the Russian fund in connection with its examination of discussions between White House adviser Jared Kushner and the head of a prominent Russian bank. The bank, Vnesheconombank, or VEB, oversees the fund, which has ties to several Trump advisers. Both the bank and the fund have been covered since 2014 by sanctions restricting U.S. business dealings.”
After discovering several inaccuracies in the piece, Breitbart released an expose, which revealed a collusion between mainstream media and politically-motivated Democrats. A source close to the Senate GOP leadership claims that this fake news story is but a series of attacks to “frustrate the efforts of President Trump’s administration while Elizabeth Warren and those of her ilk spend their days collecting taxpayer funded paychecks.”
Deputy Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders has gone on the record to call CNN a “disgrace to journalism.” Sanders announced to the White House Press Corps that despite CNN’s lukewarm apology to Scaramucci (and the subsequent resignation of three journalists involved in the story’s publication), the trend of publishing fake news and potentially influencing millions of Americans is a troubling sign of the times. When interviewed by Breitbert News’ Charlie Spiering, Sanders said, “I think that we have gone to a place where if the media can’t be trusted to report the news, then that’s a dangerous place for America.”
President Trump has already aired his views about the cable network, retweeting a parody of the CNN logo which relabeled them as “FNN” or “Fake News Network.” President Trump has also gone on to call out other news sites, such as NBC, CBS, and ABC, along with the New York Times and Washington Post, for their failing journalistic practices.
Incidentally, Scaramucci appeared unfazed by the incident, even tweeting, “@CNN did the right thing. Classy move. Apology accepted. Everyone makes mistakes. Moving on.”
When the First Amendment is abused
We have the right to free speech. Our Constitution allows for every voice to be heard — a guarantee that informed decisions are made based on facts and the acknowledgement of different opinions. Yet how is this basic human right being manipulated by popular news outlets? This is not the first time CNN has been exposed in publishing less-than-accurate news stories. Only earlier this month, CNN was shown to be staging a pro-Muslim protest over the London terror attack. A now viral video showed CNN reporter Becky Anderson directing a few protesters to stand behind her to make the gathering appear larger.
Other questionable practices by the news agency has been compiled by Project Veritas which can be seen on the One America News Network website. (Related: CNN credibility collapses under weight of fake news scandal…”no longer a news organization”.)
