A high-ranking Russian military officer has warned that the escalating conflict in Ukraine might evolve into a full-scale war in the European continent.
Col. Gen. Vladimir Zarudnitsky, head of the Military Academy of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, issued this warning in an article for the Military Thought journal run by the Russian Ministry of Defense. His alarming assessment underscores the growing concerns about the involvement of Moscow’s forces in a broader conflict.
“The possibility of an escalation in the conflict in Ukraine – from the expansion of participants in ‘proxy forces’ used for military confrontation with Russia to a large-scale war in Europe – cannot be ruled out,” he wrote.
Zarudnitsky attributed the main military threats to Russia to what he describes as the anti-Russian policies of the U.S. and its allies, accusing them of conducting hybrid warfare to weaken Russia on multiple fronts. He ultimately concluded his analysis by pointing out that “the likelihood of our state being purposefully drawn into new military conflicts is significantly increasing.”
The senior military official did not just issue his assessment, as he also proposed several changes in the way Moscow organizes its military and national security. Zarudnitsky placed greater emphasis on relying on what he dubbed as “friendly countries” to ensure its own security. He also advocated for the consolidation of the entire Russian society around the country’s defense needs.
The ongoing conflict in Ukraine, initiated by Russia’s invasion in February 2022, has not shown signs of a swift resolution. The prospect of a prolonged conflict and its potential spill beyond Ukraine’s borders has intensified concerns and is shaping the security discourse across the continent.
In fact, there are increasing worries among European Union leaders and defense ministers who are cautioning their citizens about the looming possibility of a more extensive war in the coming years. (Related: Russia accuses Ukraine of using American-made chemical weapons.)
Recently, the Scandinavian country of Sweden – traditionally known for its policy of non-alignment – has officially become the 32nd member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). This marks a significant departure from its more than 200 years of neutrality, according to the Daily Mail.
But Sweden’s March 7 accession to full membership, coupled with remarks made by Swedish Defense Minister Carl-Oskar Bohlin in January of this year, underscores the perceived need for preparation. “The world is facing a security outlook with greater risks than at any time since the end of [World War II],” he said at the time. “There could be war in Sweden.”
Meanwhile, British Defense Secretary Grant Shapps also echoed the sentiments of his Swedish counterpart. “Our adversaries are busily rebuilding their barriers,” he said likewise in January of this year. “Old enemies are reanimated, battle lines are being redrawn, the tanks are literally on Ukraine’s lawn and the foundations of the world order are being shaken to their core.”
In response to the evolving geopolitical landscape, NATO and EU countries are taking concerted measures to bolster their defense capabilities. Concurrently, there is a collective effort to supply Ukraine with additional weapons and ammunition while simultaneously enhancing arms production to meet the escalating demand.
